Church History

We owe much to the early settlers who over 120 years ago had the vision, resources and faith to build the Berlin Center United Methodist Church.  They had a vision and made it a reality.  We have made many changes and additions throughout the years, but the action of those early residents paved the way and made it easier for the rest of us.

How did the original Church get built?

The Reverend Tolan, feeling the need of a new church at Berlin Center was led by the Spirit of God to present the necessity of a new church to the people.  A vote was taken of the congregation, resulting in unanimously in favor of building.  A building committee comprised of Solomon Kline, J.B. Stantz and Dr. Hughes was appointed.  The Church was erected during the years 1886 and 1887.  The church was completed in October 1887 at a cost of $350.00.

How was the money raised?

Money was raised by subscription except $4.65 which was raised on the day of dedication, November 13, 1887.  The church was dedicated to Reverend Toland, Reverend Webster and Paster J.R. Smith, who served from September 1885 through 1887.  The membership numbered 106 at the time of the dedication.
